The main season starts in May and ends in October. They have a second season with less consistent and less strong wind from December til March. The wind is blowing every day since Mid May with about 18-25 knots.

    Kappalady

     Kappalady lagoon

    Kappalady lagoon

This is a small lagoon about 3 hours drive from Colombo airport, flat warm water and wind consistently blowing since mid May with about 20-25 knots. Sometimes quite gusty. It is the perfect playground to learn new tricks and train. Since there were a lot of very good riders, I  got a lot of inspiration and great style to watch.

When I was here in May it was never too crowded fortunately. Later in June some days got busier. But you can kite early in the morning between 8-10 am and around noon to beat the crowds.

    Kappalady beach

    Kappalady beach

You launch from the beach stretch between the lagoon and the sea. It is a 10 minutes walk from Kappalady Kitegarden, where I stayed. This place is highly recommended for the cook Prasad.  I had a very good time there, because every night the dinner is served on a big table and you can chitchat about kitesurfing endlessly. There was a very good vibe and I found a lot of new friends. Although the manager was not too charming.

A cozy place also in walking distance from the lagoon is Kite House, run by the spanish lady Anaïs, who is an amazing cook and pays a lot of attention to every detail. So her place immediately felt like home to me. Try the Mojito and Paella! And Cappuccino and Brownie…

Kappalady itself is a very nice little village with two kiosks, goats, chicken, donkeys and a lot of cute children running around. Make sure you bring some pencils and balloons and paper to give to them! You will get a lot of smiles that warm your heart!

To guarantee a deep sleep do not forget the earplugs to avoid waking up to the muezzins song or the howling dogs or roosters every night.

    Kalpitiya

About 16km further north of Kappalady is the big lagoon of Kalpitiya.  Although there is a lot of space, it can get very busy there. The wind is way gustier than at Kappalady.

    Kalpitiya Lagoon

    Kalpitiya Lagoon

Kalpitiya is a bigger village than Kappalady and you can find ATM’s, pharmacy, supermarkets and a lot of guest houses there. You can get there by Tuk Tuk (rent one by yourself or take a driver for about 1000 LKR) from Kappalady.

To improve my kitesurf skills I took part in the kitesurfcamp of Fabio Ingrosso at Srilankakite. He is very charming and made me a better kitesurfer in no time. Also the price is amazing,  300$ for 5 days of coaching with a group of 4 people, including video analysis and feedback round every day. Just make sure you are ready to crash a lot and you have painkillers in the house.

    Dream spot

About an hour by jeep from Kudawa (southern end of the Kalpitiya lagoon). The road is pretty adventurous, close by the sea, sometimes blocked by sand, trees and flood. This spot is in the middle of nowhere next to a small fishing village. Our trip was organised by Rascal´s- food and drinks and transport included for 25 Euro. Wind was stable, about 25knots all day. Nobody but me and my friends kitesurfing there. Since there is no rescue boat and the wind is side shore, we chose a little bay to stay safe. For a reason. This day I deflated my kite by crashin` it onto the water … and had to be dragged back to shore. Another lesson on safety. Never ever kitesurf without your buddies, whom you can rely on.

    Kitesurf Tuk Tuk

    Kitesurf Tuk Tuk

Except from a jellyfish sting on my leg and a fin scratch on my arm (which of course got infected) nothing serious happened to me this day.

    Puttalam Lagoon

Try a downwind safari and discover secret spots with Keira and his team. We spent a unique kitesurf adventure of two days in the lagoon. Kitesurfung in the middle of nowhere, just the 6 of us and a safety / pick nick boat following us.

Flying high in the Puttalam lagoon

Flying high in the Puttalam lagoon (not me)

There is an endless amount of secret spots to discover with good wind and stable water.

When falling asleep under the millions of stars after having had the best prawns in my life for a ridiculously small amount of money, I couldn’t stop smiling. Feeling pure bliss, being so happy to be alive.

    Vella Island

    Vella 1

Vella 1- the pro´s  are getting ready! Check out Liam Whaley and Christian Tio!

Can life get any better?! Yes! On Vella Island. Flatest water, strong consistent wind!! I do not know if I have seen any better flat water spot. And even the pro`s train here! This island is about an hour by boat from Kalpitiya. And it is called paradise for a reason! Stable strong wind and a huge flat water playground, which gets never too crowded. We got there by boat for a very reasonable price.

    Kiteflip Gang

    Kiteflip Gang

All organised by Laka, our hotel manager at Hosanna kite beach resort. I really liked this place for the friendly service and the relaxed atmosphere. It is at Kudawa, about 20min walking distance from the big lagoon of Kalpitiya. You will fall asleep to the best sound in the world- pounding waves- because it is close by the beach. Laka organises literally anything you need- kitesurf trips, lagoon transfer, vella island tours or a massage. He is fast, flexible and never rips you off. Thank you, good man!

Anything else you might want to know

    Where is the party?

If… then at Kitesurfing Lanka. This place is about 1,5km down the road from Hosanna, and the perfect place for dinner and drinks at the bar. Lots of like- minded kitesurfers from all over the world, charming stuff and some chillout tunes provide a pleasant atmosphere.

    What to bring and wear?

For kitesurfing you might want to wear excellent sun protection, rashguard and shoes. There are some so called „asshole shells“ at Kalpitiya and Vella, which are anything but pleasant to step on. Anyway I do not like shoes, so I tried the asshole shell….not recommended!

    Which kitesize?

Fine with my 9 every day! In June even more comfy on a 7! To cover all conditions bring a 12 and 7. Or whatever you feel like.

Kite storage and repair is offered at Kappalady kitegarden, also at Sri Lankakite.

Transfer and Visa and that stuff

If you book at Kappalady kitegarden your transport from Colombo airport is being organized (60€ each way for the whole car- with up to 4 people and kite luggage a good deal). Otherwise you can book a driver at the airport (I can recommend Achila: achilamanol@gmail.com or +9477 720 13 78 ). Or book with Laka, he will organize everything!

You can apply for a 30 days Visa online in advance. This is cheaper and speeds up your immigration procedure. You can extend your visa up to 3 times at Colombo immigration office (takes about a day).  There are no ATM´s at Kappalady and the Wifi at Kappalady is from the 90íes. Catch up a SIM card from Hutch or Etisalat (which I did not, because my driver said Dialog works well here and it’s crap!), which cover Kappalady better.

Sri Lanka!!! I will come back next year!!!
